CTNG Cyber Team hosts cybersecurity class at local high school

By Sgt. Damien Vega

In an effort to equip students with essential digital skills, Capt. Joel Fulsang, a cyber operations officer with the Connecticut National Guard, recently led a four-hour cybersecurity class at Hall High School in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Assisting him was the Joint Cyber Team, which included Sgt. Damien Vega, Sgt. Ian Heath, and Pfc. Conner Finch.

Together, they delivered an engaging and informative session designed to introduce students to the world of cybersecurity. With nine high schoolers in attendance, the team shared their own experiences both in the military and within the cyber field, giving students valuable insights into potential career paths.

The class covered a range of critical cybersecurity topics, including identifying online threats, phishing scams, password protection, and the importance of multi-factor authentication (MFA). Fulsang explained how simple habits, such as creating strong passwords and being cautious with suspicious emails, can significantly improve one's digital security.

The class incorporated practical exercises to reinforce these lessons, ensuring the students were not only learning concepts but also applying them in real time. These hands-on activities kept the students engaged, fostering a sense of excitement about the world of cybersecurity.

By the end of the session, the students left with a stronger understanding of how to protect themselves online and an increased awareness of potential cyber threats. The efforts of Fulsang and his team demonstrated the National Guard's commitment to empowering young minds with crucial skills for the digital age.

Their visit to Hall High School not only educated students but also inspired them to consider future opportunities in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity.
