The Connecticut National Guard works with multiple federal, state and local agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Defense (DoD), the active components of the Air Force and Army, and state regulatory offices to address potential presence of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) at Connecticut National Guard installations. PFOS and PFOA are two chemicals in a much larger class of chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)
CERCLA is the federal cleanup law that stands for “Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act.” CERCLA provides a consistent, science-based approach across the nation for cleanup.
In collaboration with regulatory agencies and interested stakeholders, the National Guard follows the CERCLA process to investigate a release resulting from Army and Air Force activities and assess the appropriate cleanup actions based on risk to human health and the environment.“
